St Marys notes 14/03/2010
Feile
The u14s continued their odyssey in this competition on Saturday 13/03/2010 when Tyrrellspass were the visitors to Rochfortbridge for the third round of the Feile. Coming into this game off two good wins, St Marys were confident they would give a good account of themselves but Tyrrellspass had overcome a fancied Multyfarnham side in the previous round so the Bridgemen knew that this wouldn't be easy.Again conditions were perfect for football with only a light breeze to contend with. The game started off at a pedestrian pace as both sides defended strongly, not allowing the opposition to settle. Eventually a point from Jack Reid opened the scoring but it took an age for another score to materialize. That took the form of a goal from Hugh Lyster and at once St Marys kicked into life and they scored freely with further goals from Eoin O'Malley and Josh Byrne and a flurry of points. With a good lead established a degree of complacency set in and Tyrrellspass raised two green flags before the break.
Half-time score; St Marys 3-06, Tyrrellspass 2-0.
The second half was but a pup when a further lapse in concentration let Tyrrellspass in for another goal. St Marys then upped their game and a couple of points followed by a Liam Metcalfe goal settled things down a bit. Tyrrellspass then scored a well merited goal which was almost immediately cancelled out by O'Malley's second goal. Both teams scored two more points each to finalise the scoring and at the end of it all St Marys emerged with the win and a spot in the semi-final of the Feile where the opponents will be either Milltownpass or Athlone.
Final Score; St Marys 5-10, Tyrrellspass 4-02.

ACFL Div 3
Moate were St Marys opponents in round 3 of the league in Rochfortbridge on Saturday 13/03/2010. Both teams came into this game with two wins each so this game had the makings of a tight affair. This is exactly what transpired as defences dominated throughout and scores proved hard to come by.
St Marys struck first with a point from Robbie Kenny. Several good chances were spurned for St Marys before Larry Poynton got on the end of a good move to direct the ball into the net. Moate kept in touch with appoint of their own before Eoin Gorman restored the margin with a point. Moate finished the scoring in a dire first half with another point.
Half-time score; St Marys 1-02, Moate 0-02.
St Marys opened the scoring in the second half with a tremendous pointed 45 from David Mitchell. Moate then scored two points to reduce the margin to two before Robbie Kenny struck a nice point to put three between the sides. Moate then hit a purple patch to knock over three points to level the match. It was now in the melting pot. A great move ended up with a penalty award to St Marys following a foot-block. When the dust had settled a nerveless Gorman stepped up to plant the ball past the keeper. Moate clawed back a point before a pointed Gorman free proved to be the last score of the game.
St Marys battled well in this game which at times threatened to boil over. It wasn't the prettiest game ever played but at the end of it all St Marys have continued their good start to the year with full points from three league games.
Full time score; St Marys 2-05, Moate 0-08.
Team and scorers; Declan Hogan, Jacko Healy, Adam Nolan, Cathal Coyle, Paul Carey, Mickey Geraghty, Ger Keegan, Tommy Geraghty, Damien Gavin, Colin Gavin, David Mitchell(0-1), Larry Poynton(1-0), Eoin Gorman(1-2), Alan Gavin, Robbie Kenny(0-2). Sub used; Ray O'Sullivan.
Minors
Our Minors travelled to Garrycastle for the second round of the division 2 league on Sunday last 14th March. Following on from the first round drawn match against Moate, a win here was vital as a moral boosting exercise for the rest of the league campaign. The young men from Garrycastle had other plans and played the much better football in the first half being efficient and very clinical upfront . Only for points from Niall Cully, Ray O'Sullivan and two wonderful left footed long range scores from Kienan Gill the halftime score of 0:7 to 0:4 in favour of the boys in green and red could have been worst.
Two astute changes made by the selectors at half time were the catalyst to spark a change of fortune which saw St. Marys hit a purple patch early in the second half to score 1:4 without reply from the home team.. Niall Cully scoring a penalty after Ian Hyland was hauled down inside the square. But to their credit, Garrycastle weathered the storm and replied with 1:1 to leave the sides level with 15 minutes remaining in the match. Both sides traded points but in the last 10 minutes St. Mary's upped the ante and kicked three crucial points from Eddie Alford, Ray O'Sullivan and Aaron Byrne.
The final score of the match was a fabulous goal taken by Declan Lennon that Wayne Rooney would be proud of but this commentator thinks that a point was the intention!!. One has to acknowledge the resolve of this team to carve out a victory in the last ten minutes of this game. Final score St. Mary's 2:12 Garrycastle 1:9

Scoil Bhride hosted Kilpatrick on Friday 12/03/2010 in a winner takes all match. The winners would advance to the semi-final of this competition whereas the losers would be finished for the year. The importance of the game was reflected in the tightness of the exchanges as every ball was contested vigorously. Early scores were swapped as both teams settled quickly. Then Scoil Bhride embarked on a mini scoring spree to open up a five point gap. It looked to be going the way of the Rochfortbridge boys but then a goal and two points from Kilpatrick levelled the match. Scoil Bhride responded with a point and then Jack Hall pounced for a goal to restore a four point lead. Two points from Kilpatrick closed out the first half.
Half time score; Scoil Bhride 1-07, Kilpatrick 1-05.
Scoil Bhride were quickly off the mark in the second half with a nice point from Evan Gorman. Almost immediately Kilpatrick recorded a second goal to level the match once more. Scoil Bhride responded well and knocked over 4 more points before Kilpatrick finished off with a point. Both teams missed numerous chances during the game and this was surely attributable big game nerves. Scoil Bhride prevailed but at no stage did they kill off the Kilpatrick challenge .This is testament to the teamwork and never-say-die attitude of the Kilpatrick team and indeed, with a bit of luck the result could have been different. As for Scoil Bhride they now go on to face Kilbeggan in the semi-final on Thursday 25/03/2010 and we look forward to that game.
Final score; Scoil Bhride 1-12, Kilpatrick 2-06.
